Practitioners

Dr Kylie Dodsworth BMBS, BSc, FRACGP, MACNEM, MAIMA

KylieI am a fully qualified medical practitioner (GP) who graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Flinders University and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Adelaide. I have also been awarded my Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and have undertaken extensive post-graduate studies in Nutritional Medicine. I am a Member of both the Australian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) and the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association (AIMA) and I am the South Australian representative on the Board of AIMA.

My professional work and undergraduate studies have offered me varied experiences including work as a GP in both a rural setting in Mannum on the Murray River and in a number of practices in urban Adelaide. I have also worked in a Youth Health Centre called The Second Story, and with homeless youth in the inner city. As a final year medical student I worked in rural Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom and on an Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory.

I founded the Centre for Health and Wellbeing in 2005 as I wished to offer a form of medicine which has its total approach based in ‘integrative medicine’. My philosophy for health care reflects my belief that true healing involves much more than simply ‘managing symptoms’. I practice in a way which determines the underlying causes for ill health by focusing on imbalances in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of your life. I then work with you to determine a program of health care which allows your body to heal itself using natural ‘tools’ including dietary change, nutritional and herbal supplements, bio-identical hormone therapy and stress management strategies, as well as conventional medicine as required. I discuss your results and treatment with you in detail so that you can come to understand your own body and learn how to maintain your own health and wellbeing

Using this approach I am able to address your health issues in an integrated way including:

Women’s Health: pre-menstrual symptoms, menopause, osteoporosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, breast health and general health
Men’s Health: prostate issues, male andropause, low libido, general health
Children’s Health: mood disorders , food sensitivities, asthma, eczema, poor digestion, recurrent infections
General Health: blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, arthritis, irritable bowel, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia
Mental Health: depression, anxiety, bipolar mood disorder, psychosis, drug and alcohol withdrawal.

I look forward to assisting you as we re-create your natural state of health and wellbeing.

For your first appointment please bring with you:

  1. A brief outline of your medical history
  2. The results of any investigations or specialist consultations relevant to your current health problem.
  3. A list of any medications and nutritional supplements you are taking (it is actually helpful if you bring the bottles with you so we can check the actual amounts of the various nutrients in the supplements you are taking, as it is impossible to keep track of all the different formulations available).
  4. A 3 day example of your normal diet and exercise routines
  5. If you have been very ill please arrange for your partner or primary care-giver to attend with you for these sessions. It is important that they understand the program being developed for you and the rationale behind it so they can assist you in your efforts to reclaim your health.

If you are interested in ‘natural’ or ‘bio-identical’ hormone therapy, there is also a very good website at www.natural-progesterone-advisory-network.com

For further information about doctors using Nutritional and Integrative Medicine you can visit the following websites: www.acnem.org and www.aima.net.au - the philosophy of this approach is summarised below:

The Philosophy of AIMA

  • Abide by the Hippocratic dictum of “first do no harm”.
  • Respect for patient’s autonomy and participatory role in the healing process.
  • Serve our patients and the community with a focus on prevention and health promotion.
  • Encourage a holistic and collaborative attitude amongst doctors and health care professionals.
  • Uphold the World Health Organisation mandate for optimal health to be inclusive of physical, social, psychological, emotional and spiritual well being
  • Maintain the role of the medical practitioner as the primary care provider whilst working in a multidisciplinary team of other health providers.
  • Promote models of health care which attend to a person’s experience of illness, as well as their symptoms of disease via ethical, natural and wherever possible, evidence-based therapies.
  • To be guided by the Declaration of Helsinki (of World Health Organisation) that maintains: that a physician must be free to use the most appropriate treatment if in his or her judgement it will result in the alleviation of suffering or the restoration of health or saving the life of a patient.

Core Values

  • To encourage a holistic attitude amongst doctors and medical students and enhance skills in whole person medicine.
  • To encourage the ‘wellness’ paradigm amongst medical practitioners by fostering an attitude of Prevention and Health Promotion as a fundamental cornerstone in primary care.
  • To foster an attitude of respect for the rights of patients to exercise choice, and ownership of their treatment and management, and doing so with the giving of proper information, both mainstream and complementary to assist patients with their decision towards consent or refusal of specific treatments.

Dr Kerry Callaghan M.B.,B.S.

I am a fully qualified Medical Practitioner and graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1963.

My early post-graduate years were devoted to pediatrics and in 1972 I shifted to “Child & Family Counselling”. I was instrumental in assisting staff and parents at the Adelaide Children’s Hospital (now the Women’s and Children’s Hospital) to create a caring and family oriented approach for sick children.

After pursuing a career in Children’s Medicine for a number of years I moved into the field of Individual, Group and Family Therapy.

I then decided to explore Nutritional Medicine and Hormonal Balancing as an approach to managing health and illness. I focus on improving your nutrition and developing optimal exercise and lifestyle changes to recover, maintain and promote a state of wellness in body, mind and spirit.

I retired from my own full-time practice on April 1st, 2009 and since then have been enjoying more fully my interests in dogs and horses.

I joined the Centre for Health and Wellbeing in April 2010 on a part time basis (I still consider myself semi retired!) and I look forward to assisting patients with Hormonal Balancing and what I now call “Conversational Life Counseling” drawing on my experiences and training in Individual Group and Family Therapy and Nutritional Medicine.

Dr Kristin Roe BMBS (Flinders), FRACGP, FACNEM

I am a fully qualified medical practitioner (GP). I grew up in Germany where the use of complimentary medicine is integrated in orthodox medicine. I began my medical studies at Freiburg University and then completed my degree at Flinders Medical School in Adelaide in 1990.

After two resident years at the Royal Adelaide Hospital I moved to Brisbane in 1992 and worked at the Royal Brisbane Hospital for a year. I then decided to train as a General Practitioner and in 1996 completed my Fellowship in General Practice. Over the following years, I worked part time for the Australian Defence Forces as well as in General Practice. In 2004 I completed my Fellowship in Nutritional and Environmental Medicine. I have completed a Masters in Public Health and Tropical Medicine at James Cook University in 2009.

My credentials are as follows:

  • Fellow of Australian College of General Practitioners
  • Fellow of Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine
  • Postgraduate certificate in Integrated Medicine
  • Masters of Public Health and tropical Medicine
  • Member of Australian Integrative Medicine Association

On completing my medical studies in Australia I realised that patients were becoming increasingly interested in using complimentary therapies including nutritional medicine to regain wellbeing or to positively affect their chronic illnesses. I commenced further studies in nutritional therapies, mind-body, herbal and homeopathic teachings. It is my belief that integrating orthodox medicine with these therapies can provide a holistic approach to your health care.

Dr Cameron Day BMBS, FRACGP, Grad.Cert. Musc.Med

I am a fully qualified GP having graduated with a medical degree from the Flinders University of SA (BMBS) and a Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP). I also have a Graduate Certificate of Musculoskeletal Medicine (Grad Cert Musc Med) which means that I have extra skills in a branch of medicine that addresses pain in muscles, bones, ligaments and joints. This approach uses a number of hands on techniques including those similar to a physiotherapist or chiropractor, as well as acupuncture needles or injections with steroids, anaesthetics or prolotherapy. I predominantly use Craniosacral Therapy (CST) and Visceral Manipulation. I am also a Member of the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (MACNEM) which gives me a good grounding in nutrition to help with musculoskeletal problems and the body as a whole. I regularly attend seminars to update and expand my skills.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) was developed by Dr John Upledger who is a US osteopath who teaches at the Upledger Institute in Florida USA (www.upledger.com). This is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of a physiological body system called the ‘craniosacral system’ which is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. A soft touch is used to assess and release restrictions in the body and craniosacral system and when these restrictions are released, the function of the central nervous system in greatly improved. By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease. CST is also highly effective in treating a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

  • Migraine Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Motor-Coordination Impairments
  • Colic
  • Autism
  • Central Nervous System Disorders including seizures
  • Orthopaedic Problems
  • Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Scoliosis
  • Infantile Disorders
  • Learning Difficulties
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Emotional Difficulties
  • Stress and Tension-Related Problems
  • Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders
  • Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
  • Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Post-Surgical Dysfunction

Visceral Manipulation

Visceral manipulation was developed by a French osteopath and physical therapist Jean- Pierre Barral (www.barralinstitute.com). “Viscera” mean the organs of the body. These organs all have their own inherent movements as they function and as they interact with one another. If an organ isn’t working properly (eg liver or stomach) its movement is affected and then it can affect the organs and muscles surrounding it. This dysfunction is usually caused by physical trauma (eg a car accident), illness (eg gastroenteritis) or food intolerances causing inflammation (eg gluten/wheat). As a result of organ dysfunction, people can develop digestive problems, fatigue, musculoskeletal problems especially back, shoulder and postural distortion, as well as neuromuscular dysfunction and disease processes.

For example, the adhesion (a stuck organ) could alter rib motion, which could then create imbalanced forces on the vertebral column and, with time, possibly develop a dysfunctional relationship with other structures. This scenario highlights just one of hundreds of possible ramifications of a small dysfunction - magnified by thousands of repetitions each day.

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a safe and effective, non-surgical treatment that provides increased strength in joints, ligaments and tendons. It can eliminate even chronic longstanding back, neck and joint pain. Prolotherapy involves injecting a small amount of fluid into the site of pain or dysfunction in the body and the irritation cause by the fluid stimulates the body to lay down extra ligament-like tissue. This promotes the repair of weakened and torn ligaments by a natural healing mechanism.

Ligaments are vital for joint stability
Ligaments are bands of tough, fibrous tissue that hold the joints in place. If the joint is put under sudden great strain as in a car accident, severe fall, or from lifting a heavy object, the ligament will be stretched or torn. Often torn or stretched ligaments do not heal well due to poor blood supply. They can also become strained if overstretched constantly, for example the typist’s upper back.

When the ligaments are too loose, the joint slips and slides out of the track it was designed to follow and the cartilage will become worn. This is osteoarthritis.
The goal of prolotherapy is to inject an irritating solution to produce a slight inflammation
. This increases the blood supply. Fibroblasts (healing cells) travel to this irritated spot and lay down new fibrous connective tissue (collagen) within and around it, strengthening the ligaments. Over a few months the new tissue is remodelled and shrinks to fit around the joint.

As a result there is increased joint, ligament, and tendon stability and greater strength. Chronic joint pain is relieved. Surprisingly mobility has been shown to increase. This is because stiffness is often due to protective muscle spasm, and once the pain from the ligaments is relieved the muscles relax.

The Technique
The solution contains 25% glucose which is irritating at the site of injection because it is a more concentrated form of sugar than the body usually has in its tissues (5% is the usual concentration of glucose). A weak solution of lignocaine (local anaesthetic) is also added to the mix. Sometimes stronger solutions are used for a stronger effect.

The solution is injected where the ligament attaches onto the bone. Usually a number of different points must be injected during a treatment as there are a number of ligaments involved in stabilising each joint and the aim is to strengthen the whole area around the joint.

Tatiana Sokolova ND

TatianaGet well using lifestyle as preventative medicine for your body, mind and spirit.

I am a Naturopath and I have extensive training in several diagnostic and treatment modalities.  I have also trained as a Medical Practitioner in Russia and I studied physiotherapy and acupuncture. I am now able to combine these areas of knowledge to serve your health needs holistically and to create a harmonious environment which unifies your body, mind and spirit.

I currently work with the following modalities:

  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Homeopathy
  • Vega Testing
  • Nutri-Energetic System (NES) testing
  • Herbal Medicine
  • SCENAR Therapist
  • Biomesotherapy

Clinical nutrition
is a relatively young science exploring what nutrients are needed for an adequate diet and what foods provide them.  There is often a need to take some additional nutritional supplements to create full health and I work with you to personalise your approach to diet and supplements according to your individual needs. Nutritional knowledge helps me to re-evaluate your eating habits and to discover the underlying reasons for any nutritional imbalances.  Common imbalances are caused by an excessive energy intake and overeating, or dieting and malnutrition, food intolerances, body fat accumulation and metabolic diseases.  These conditions are all preventable.  Take the opportunity correct these imbalances and to minimise your risk of developing these health conditions.

Homeopathy is a complete system of medicine which reinforces the bodies own natural healing capacity.  It is well know that homeopathic remedies are very dilute in their preparation and work at the level of energy and not of matter. The correct remedy produces a "resonance" between the person and the substance administered, initiating and completing a change from diseased condition back to the state of health.  Homeopathy can be very valuable in helping your body to detoxify as well.  Detoxification means to open the gates of the cells to eliminate toxins from inside to outside, clean and repair surrounding tissue damage, and supply the cells with their nutritional needs.  It is truly a "clinical nutrition" on a cellular level!  This medicine also is a very effective treatment for relieving stress on each of the mental, emotional and physical levels, leading your body to find its optimal balance and happiness.

Herbal Medicine is an ancient form of medicine which uses collective knowledge of healing plants as its basis and is one of the most popular modalities in our modern time.  Allergies, stress, emotional imbalance, negative thoughts and loneliness, mental and physical fatigue all reflect our alienation from a "natural lifestyle".  Using herbs we are able to reconnect to Mother Nature’s wisdom and achieve our predecessors’ vitality.  It is as useful in preventing illness as it is in curing it.

Nutri-Energetic System (NES) Testing allows me to read your electro-magnetic body field and compare it to the optimum human body field, which is programmed into the computer software.  The reading is obtained by putting your hand on a special probe which works as a form of antennae and carries your body-field picture into the computer, which is then compared with the optimum field and the results are displayed on the computer screen.  Based on your individual reading I determine a treatment plan which is customised to your needs. The principal remedies of NES healing system are homeopathic drops.

Vega Testing is used to access electromagnetic energy running through an acupuncture point on your thumb or finger.  It is a bio-energetic measurement of your individual health capacity and your readings are used to determine which factors are impinging on your health.  This technique allows the assessment of numerous or complex factors which often combine to impact on your body’s balance (homeostasis). Testing can assess the balance or imbalance of a wide array of foods, vitamins, minerals, chemicals, heavy metals,  hormones and organ functions.

SCENAR is an acronym for Self-Controlled-Electro-Neuro-Adaptive-Regulator.  It is a portable electro-magnetic device, which delivers therapeutic electrical signals through the skin. This signal stimulates the nervous system to produce natural chemicals called neuropeptides (endorphins) which are our natural opioids (painkillers).  These chemicals then activate the parasympathetic (or relaxing) part of our nervous system and suppress the focus of pain in our brain. This can result in immediate pain reduction and often produces sustained pain relief.  SCENAR therapy is one of the best non-invasive medical technologies for pain relief around the world.  Treatment has a profound effect on both chronic and acute pain conditions and injuries and a study in Sydney showed ‘dramatic and sustained results’ with chronic pain reduction, functional improvements and general health restoration. Using SCENAR techniques we can help re-establish the body’s inherent mechanisms of adaptation and stress reduction, hormone balance, immune response and optimum energy flow.

Biomesotherapy is a technique which has been used successfully to relieve symptomatic pain more than 3 decades.  There are over 70 million consultations in this popular natural therapy in Europe each year and its safety profile is excellent.  The treatment consists of a combination of an injection at the site of pain and the administration of an oral homeopathic medicine.  The injection uses a small amount of sterile saline solution (which is exactly the same as the body’s fluid composition) just under the skin of the painful or damaged area.  This gently stimulates and then normalises any nervous system imbalance and the body is encouraged to start healing itself.

Anthony Gray Adv Dip Hom

Why should you choose homoeopathy as your therapy?

Homeopathy is a natural therapy that prescribes safe, gentle and effective natural medicines that are tailored to you as an individual to target the root cause of your illness.

Prescriptions are based on an individualised approach as people with the same illness can each experience different symptoms that are unique to their own body. For example, ‘headache’ is a generalised term and so homeopaths consider the location, the type of pain, triggers that start it and other symptoms in the body that may seem unrelated but are very important for effective treatment.

A single homeopathic medicine is selected on holistic principles to match your individual symptoms from over 2500 natural medicines verified and documented over the last 200 years.
Homeopathy does not control or suppress disease as with conventional medicine, it supports and strengthens your body to address the underlying root cause of the illness and restore health and well-being.

Homeopathy is a specialised form of complementary medicine that is different from naturopathy and vitamin supplements. Supplements and vitamins work to temporarily support the body in healing while you are taking them but don’t offer a long term solution to restore health. Homeopathic medicines direct the body’s own ability to heal by acting as a catalyst, stimulating the body’s immune system to create the cure and this reduces the need for additional supplements or vitamins.

I have seen thousands of patients with a variety of diseases successfully treated with homeopathic medicines through my years of clinical and hospital experience. Understanding my patients and their illness is the key to accurate prescriptions.

I offer straight forward advice on health care and deliver consistent results to my patients

MASSAGE

Massage - styles available include Remedial for therapeutic purposes, Relaxation, and Pregnancy massage. These different styles of massage are used to suit your needs and preference and are tailored to your situation to help with aches and pains, strains and stress, and also restricted movement.

Massage stimulates blood and lymph flow through the body which increases the rate of exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide and promotes healthy metabolism. This results in a reduction of muscle tension and release of restrictions in movement. It also allows you to become more aware of where you ‘hold’ stress in your body and also where the aches and pains originate. In addition to these obvious health benefits, massage also feels great!

Remedial massage has a therapeutic focus, where the aim is to assist healing from strain, injury, or restriction.
Relaxation massage is a gentle soothing therapy aimed at stress relief and allows you to drift off and enjoy a safe, peaceful, relaxing experience.

Pregnancy massage is quite different and is very gentle; taking into account the changes that occur within the mother’s body. The focus is body awareness and relief from the growing pains and discomfort. Each trimester has different requirements in order to support the mother as comfortably as possible.

Quantum-Touch - Energy Therapy is a form of energy work that is great for pain, tension, and movement restrictions and allows for emotional healing where appropriate, without the need to re-live the issues. Quantum-Touch is a hands-on-healing modality that is continuously proving it to be one of the most powerful and successful alternative medicines of our time (www.quantumtouch.com).

Myofascial Release - is a great therapy that relieves tight muscles and increases range of movement, without pain and bruising. This therapy works with the connective tissue throughout the body to release adhesions and restrictions. It is useful for many physical problems, including:

  • Back strain and general chronic or acute back pain
  • Lumbar and thoracic pain (pain in upper back, ribs and lower back)
  • Chronic cervical pain (neck pain)
  • Dizziness, vertigo
  • Carpel tunnel syndrome (wrist pain, stiffness, and reduced movement)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Fibrositis
  • Headaches
  • Myofascial pain dysfunction
  • Plantar fasciitis (foot pain)
  • TMJ dysfunction (jaw pain, clicking)
  • Whiplash
  • Chronic pain syndromes

Craniosacral Therapy - is a gentle but profound therapy working with the cerebrospinal fluid and the bones of the head, spine and pelvis. This therapy is great for headaches, sinus problems, TMJ issues, and pelvic imbalance. Craniosacral Therapy helps to boost general well being, reduce stress, improve quality of sleep, increase energy and enhance the functioning of all the body's organs. It is a non-intrusive therapy that works with the entire structure, physiology, mind and spirit.

Anma - is a style of massage where you do not need to undress. It is ideal when treating elderly or pregnant people or even children, and also in situations where it is not easy or appropriate to undress. It allows the recipient to remain in their comfort zone while receiving a massage. This style is the basis for corporate massage and is both therapeutic and relaxing.

Polarity - Dr Randolph Stone developed Polarity Therapy, which heals by activating the Chi energy and balancing the natural life force energy fields around the body. Universal energy flows through all of nature, and as we are a part of nature, the energy also flows through and sustains us by the law of opposites. It is an energy technique that uses the practitioner to jump start energy flow around blockages in the client's body. It increases the sense of wellbeing and vitality.
